WEATHER-READY OUTFITS
What should you wear when the weather keeps changing?
A useful outfit starts with the conditions you will actually face: how it feels now, the high and low later, and whether rain or snow is likely.
Start with the whole day, not just the morning
- Check the temperature that it feels like as well as the expected high and low. A comfortable morning can turn chilly after sunset, and a mild high can still feel cold in wind or shade.
- If you will be outside for a while, plan for the coldest or wettest part of your day. You can always take off a light layer indoors.
Build an easy layer system
- Begin with clothes that feel comfortable against your skin. Add a middle layer such as a sweater or fleece when temperatures may drop.
- Choose an outer layer for the forecast: a warm coat for colder conditions, or a rain shell when showers are possible.
- Wear shoes that suit the ground and the weather. Wet sidewalks call for footwear that can handle getting damp; snow and ice call for warmth and traction.
Keep the outfit personal
- Use weather advice as a starting point, then choose colors, fits, and styles you enjoy. There is no single correct outfit for everyone.
- Think about your plans, how long you will be outdoors, and what you already own. Bring a compact layer when the forecast is uncertain.
