COOK WITH WHAT YOU HAVE
How to find a meal in the ingredients you already have
Before making another shopping trip, take a quick look at what is in your fridge, freezer, and pantry. A few ingredients can be enough to choose a direction for a meal.
Make a quick kitchen list
- Write down one protein or other filling ingredient, one grain or starchy food, and any vegetables or fruit that should be used soon.
- Include canned, frozen, and leftover ingredients. They count too, and they can save prep time.
- If you are missing one or two items, decide whether an easy substitute will work before adding them to a shopping list.
Choose a simple meal structure
- Pair a filling ingredient with a base such as rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, or beans.
- Add vegetables for color and texture, then use a sauce, herbs, or spices you already have to bring the meal together.
- Use a recipe as a guide, not a rule. Check cooking times and make sure meat, fish, and eggs are cooked safely.
Check your needs before choosing
- Keep allergies and food preferences in mind when reviewing a recipe. Read the full ingredient list and packaging labels, especially for prepared sauces and seasonings.
- Use ingredients that spoil sooner first. Refrigerate leftovers promptly and follow local food-safety guidance.
